The technology exists right now to build vehicles which produce no pollution. This is demonstrated every year by the World Solar Challenge, in which extremely aerodynamic and lightweight vehicles traverse Australia using only the power of the sun’s rays. However, these vehicles are impractical for everyday use and don’t resemble the cars to which we are all accustomed. To be accepted by the public, vehicles powered by renewable energy must demonstrate that they’re both environmentally friendly and comparable in comfort, versatility and performance to “regular” and "performance" cars. |

Formula SAE is an international design and performance competition, organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers. UWA has been extremely successful in the Formula SAE, taking out several national and international titles, including the Word Championship in 2008.
For the REV project, we have obtained the 2001 car from UWA Motorsport, which we have converted to a pure plug-in electric car. Although the SAE currently only proposes a "hybrid league", we think that it does make a lot more sense to built purely electric race cars, rather than constructing two power trains for a car of such a small size. The SAE does allow pure electric cars in the hybrid league for their first year, and we hope that this ruling may become permanent in the future.
